Abstract : A formula is derived for the shock-wave attenuation about a 3-d dimensional body. The flow behind the shock was assumed to be isentropic at large distances from the body. The study indicated that (1) the pressure rise across the shock wave decays as the inverse three-fourths power of the ridial distance (r) from the body axis, and (2) the shock wave has no asymptote, although the shock angle approaches the free-stream Mach angle as r approaches limit of infinity. Experimental data obtained from spark shadow-graphs are presented to support the theory.
