Abstract : The driving aptitude of 1400 Army drivers was measured with pen cil- and-paper tests developed in a 3-stage validation study using associates' and supervisors' ratings on the drivers' rating from X-2 as the criteria. The best predictor measures were age, attention to detail, knowledge of driving, driver's self-description blank, emergency judgment, 2-hand coordination, and word matching. An operational battery of the 7 equally weighted tests was compiled with a cross-validity of 0.38; divided into 2 smaller batteries of 4 and 3 tests each, the coefficients were 0.39 and 0.24, respectively. The current driver- selection battery had a cross-validity of only about 0.18 and required more time and effort to administer.
