Abstract : Studies were made on the phosphorolysis of maltose by meningococcus and on a new mechanism of glucose oxidation by Pseudomonas saccharophila. The utilization of fructose and glucose by P. saccharophila appeared to involve a mutational phenomenon, whereas sucrose may be utilized by all cells. A specific fructokinase was produced in response to fructose or sucrose, but did not insure the use of exogenously supplied fructose by the organism. The study of sucrose phosphorylases from P. saccharophila, Palmula putrefaciens, and Leuconostoc was initiated.
