Abstract : A critical review of developments in scintillation counters is presented with emphasis on radiobiological applications. The theory of scintillation counting is discussed, and the advantages and disadvantages of both photon counters and photomultipliers are considered with regard to their counting and recording of scintillations. Various scintillation phosphors are evaluated, and tabular data are presented on the fluorescence properties of scintillation substances. Applications of scintillation counters are pointed out for use in measurements of particle energies, gamma-ray spectroscopy, coin- phenomena, and radiobiological reactions.
