Abstract : Longitudinal equations of motion are developed for a tandem foil hydrofoil craft with a constant lift control on the forward hydrofoil. The roots of the characteristic stability equation are interpreted in terms of the physical motions expected for the craft. Several of the component stability modes involved are independent of one another, thus permitting simplified solutions to the general case of 4 degrees of freedom without loss of accuracy. Control inertia and mass unbalance are shown to have a negligible effect upon the hydrofoil craft motions. The short period craft oscillation can be isolated in study by assuming constant forward velocity of the craft. Numerical correlation was based upon the Lantern configuration developed by the Hydrofoil Corp.
