Abstract : The principle of the method of Paneth and Hofeditz of studying gaseous free radicals has been employed for chain reactions in liquid monomers, The half-life of the photochemically initiated polystyrene free radical has been found tO be 0.088 +- 0.015 seconds. A simple extension of the technique should also give absolute values of the propagation rate constant and the chain transfer constant.
