Abstract : The design of an optimum filter is postulated to be difficult when synthesis is attempted on a frequency-response basis. If synthesis is carried out on an impulse-responce basis, this type of filter can be very nearly approximated by a tapped delay line, weighting networks, and an adding circuit. A formula derived for setting the threshold voltage in the pulse-train correlator appears to combat satisfactorily the effect of pure constant- amplitude pulse jamming. A pulse-train generator was constructed to provide an 8-digit number consisting of 0.6-millisec. pulses spaced at intervals of 1.8, 4. 2, 3.6, 1.2, 7.2, 3.0, and 2.4 millisec., The repetition rate of the number is variable from about 2 to 11 kc. A pulse-jamming generator was completed in breadboard form with a PRF variable from 40 kc. to 1 mc., and a pulse width variable over the 0.5- to 1.5-millisec. range. Climatological data yielded the following maximum expected densities of rainfall for a 200-mi. path: 12.5 mm./hr. in the temperate zone, and 50 mm./hr. in the tropics. Attenuation by rainfall of centimeter waves appeared excessive for all wave lengths shorter than 5 cm. in tropic regions.
